A little from WikiPedia tells that Midfielders are generally positioned on the field between their team’s defenders and forwards. Some midfielders play a disciplined defensive role, breaking up attacks, and are otherwise known as defensive midfielders.
From my own listing I think these are the top 10 midfielders in the world. The list is in no particular order:
1. Ivan Rakitic

One of the best midfielders in the world right now. Rakitic was marvellous for Croatia in the World Cup and played a huge role in their run to the finals.
The 30-year-old has been exceptional for Barcelona ever since his arrival in 2014. He has been ever-present in the Barcelona midfield. Known for his work rate, discipline, and ability to defend and attack.

2. Sergio Busquets

A very underrated player who has played a crucial part in the club’s success for more than a decade now. He may be the only midfielder in the world who is more dangerous without the ball than with it.
The reason Busquets is so dangerous without the ball, is his positioning. He finds space which makes it harder for the opposition to gain possession. He’s invaluable to the club and can never be replaced.
No footballer is even close to this man’s understanding of the game. He always there at the right place and at the right time. Though he is now in his 30s, he still remains one of the world’s best playmakers.

3. Christian Eriksen

An intelligent midfielder who’s been Tottenham’s creative man for the last couple of seasons. Eriksen been racking up assist after assist since his move to England in 2013. He’s the perfect balance of vision and coordination.
Like Kevin de Bruyne, he’s the ultimate attacking midfielder. Technically brilliant, with the athleticism he possesses. A master at finding pockets of space, terrorising oppositions week in week out.

4. Isco

When it comes to the attacking talent at Real Madrid, Isco is sometimes forgotten, his influence on the front line cannot be underestimated.
He’s been at the top of the game for five years, and has the composure to win big games. Very versatile in the attacking areas. He works best as a number ten behind the striker, but can also operate from the wings. To top it off, his dribbling skills is second to none.

5. David Silva

A Manchester City midfield general, who won his third title after a superb individual season in 2017/18. Capable of playing on the right, as a No.10 or in the slightly deeper midfield role, a master at pulling the strings.
His decision-making is impeccable, and has brilliant technique. He’s even begun to add more goals to his game, becoming an even more rounded player.

6. N’Golo Kante

Kante is a very different type of player, but he’s undoubtedly one of the world’s top midfielders. A two-time Premier League champion and World Cup winner, he’s an elite ball-winner since he played a role in Leicester’s title run of 2015/16.

7. Thiago Alcantra

Thiago’s career has been plagued with injuries, but in term of talent, he’s up there with the world class. He combines Brazilian dribbling skills with Spanish passing ability.
Very comfortable on the ball in tight spaces, and can pick a pass out with ease. He is only 27, and can still improve. A technically excellent player, who can hopefully reach his potential.

8. Kevin De Bruyne

Pundits are lost for words when describing Kevin De Bruyne over the last 12 months, the massive role he played in Manchester City’s record-breaking Premier League season. He contributed with 12 goals and help assist 20+ for teammates in all competitions.
He is one of the best playmakers right now. Controlling matches with ease, with his remarkable passing abilities.

9. Toni Kroos

One of the most complete midfielders football has ever seen, he proved vital for Germany as they won the World Cup back in 2014. His unique set of skills help him function as both a playmaking midfielder and a defensive one for his team. His passes are so effective and precise.
At school, he was so good he was made to play without boots on to give his opponents a chance.

10. Luka Modric

Arguably one of the best midfielders of all time. He proved that he still possesses the magic at the age of 33 with his exceptional performances in the World Cup 2018.
One of the smartest footballers, as he brilliantly makes chances and tracks back. His undeniable talent at carrying the ball forward and controlling the tempo was the prime reason Croatia booked their place in the World Cup finals.
